The I-400 was an unprecedented submergible aircraft carrier that could launch three Seiran aircraft. With a 122m length, 12m width, and a 6560-ton submerged displacement, its size was similar to a destroyer, making it the largest submarine of its time. It featured the ability to travel one and a half times around the globe without refueling or restocking. Construction finished in December 1944, the I-400 and its sister vessel, the I-401, were en route to the U.S. Naval base at Ulithi when WWII ended. Thanks to its superior design, the I-400 is considered the precursor to modern strategic nuclear missile submarines.
